Well! Last week I have completed one year of my stay in India after living in abroad for 7+ years. Thought I would share some of the stuff that i have gone through during this one year.

I come from South India (Chidambaram). Like many Indians, I went to abroad (Australia) to pursue my Master degree in IT. (I still don’t know why US embassy in Chennai rejected my student visa ;) ). Spent nearly 2 years in Australia, then I got a job to work in Geneva, Switzerland for United Nations. Lived in Switzerland for 5 years. I was also travelling a lot for work purpose and covered almost 12 countries in that 7+ years (lucky me). So the point is, I got used to the some of the good things in abroad life like quality environment, work timings and company culture, respect for nature, road infrastructure, and easy accessibility for document clearance and so on. The other side is always green, don’t they?

There is nothing like your mother land. After being married for 1.5 years, one fine day me and my wife decided to move back to India from Switzerland. It was not an easy decision for us as I was worried how I am going to fit myself back to Indian work culture. In India competition is very high, so you need to keep proving yourself in your work, education and so on. This will obviously lead to politics in work environment. So I took a great care on choosing my future company in India. I have posted my resume in Naukri and Timesjob. Within few hours I got plenty of interview calls. Funny though, many companies were very suspicious why I want to come back to India. Within few weeks I rounded with job opportunities from Google, IBM, Franklin Templeton and Xebia. I took Xebia offer for many good reasons, especially for its technical offerings on Spring Hibernate Maven Agile and so on.

Xebia is located in Gurgaon, North India and so people in Gurgaon mainly speak Hindi. Now, as I come from south India, in particular from Tamilnadu, I don’t even know a bit of Hindi and I also don’t know anyone in Gurgaon before. That’s created another challenge for me. Before moving to India, I did some background work on house rental cost, lifestyle, living expense, internet facilities and so on. My wife is a dentist, so like any other partner I was also checking the opportunity for her to work in Gurgaon. Xebia gave their company email access to me in-prior, so I also started bugging my new colleagues for tips and suggestions. Anurag, Jyoti, Piryanshu and Vikas gave me lots of tips. With these tips in mind and with big confidence in heart, I landed in Gurgaon on Feb 25th 2007.

Within the first 3 weeks, i managed to find a 3BHK apartment with the help of www.99acres.com. A new friend cum brother called Mr. Sutharman helped me a lot in getting the new telephone and internet connection from BSNL. He also helped me in buying furniture’s from a store in Delhi. Managed to get a cooking gas connection within 2 days from 'Uruvasi gas agency'. Company opened a bank account in ABN AMRO and the bank gave me the ATM card within 1 month. Contrary to what I had experienced 8 years back, BSNL operators were after me on making sure that I get the telephone connection. Uruvasi gas agency delivered the gas cylinder very quickly and they were angry with me for NOT being at home when they came earlier twice.
Every day at least one person knocked my home for Ironing service, gardening, maid service, car washing and so on. I use to negotiate the price and talk to them by waving my hands and head all around (oh!.. still today I do it).

I was amazed to see the growth of India after 8 years. Gurgaon is full of high raise buildings, big malls, BPO and IT companies. If you want to see the developed India then come and see Gurgaon. Having said that be careful while driving in India, road rage is part of daily news in news papers. While officially we drive in left hand side, in the suburb areas we also like to drive in the middle of the road, and sometime even in the right side. The municipal corporation is now building 1 feet divider to avoid this problem. See!... India is changing and growing. Many information were available in internet now and online shopping sites were also growing a lot. Still today I never paid any bribe to get some work done in Gurgaon with the Governmental sectors. See!... India is shining as well.

If you are thinking about moving back to India and if you have some specific question or doubt in mind, then please post it here, I will try to answer for it.

Nice crisp narration! though personally I was looking for yoru experience in India i.e., a short comparison with the life outside:) anway..I guess the reason why so many services are available at so lessa cost is because of cut throat competition! I guess overall we are heading well -- expect for the hiccups i.e., kidnapping and some miscretants...Bangalore is no different cost is about 1/10 th of what i am used to outside India...and lifestyle is equally good..
Also, I woudl be surious to learn more about your hindi....tell us more about it:)
Arun,
My Hindi.....hee hee. Let me not kill our national language. ;)
Dear Balaji, Excellent one. Almost I read all of your posts ; "Importance Of Attitude in Agile Projects", "Make your Scrum Team Sync-n-Happy" are my picks and it impressed me a lot & probed me to look at the pointers [books, blogs, author reference] for further reading.
Senthi, Nice to see you online. Thanks to Arun.V, he the one who linked me to you all. I was checking through your blog and found it quite interesting. Happy blogging.
Regards
Balaji
Wow ... found a house through 99acres.com for rent. I guess the situation is far different down south. (Gurgaon, I guess is a new upscale planned development.). Bribe - try getting a driving license without going through a driving school(because he pays on your behalf.) Anyways .... welcome back to India !! All said and done, home is home, and India is the best.
Ram, I dont think the situation is that bad down south as well..I had rented iout a couple of properties in Chennai and Bangalore using one of these websites. I guess the point is the target audience..people who are in front of computers and access these sites are ready catch:) whereas people from a previous generation including my parents are having these intro sessions and are skeptical to reachout based on computer ads (thats what they call 'em:))
how did you move your stuff to India from Switzerland? Any suggestions on movers and packers? Thanks. Chetan
Hi Cheten
I have used Swiss post for this. I sent 12 packages of 20kg each. I found it cheap , fast and reliable.
Hello, are there any customs issues moving stuff into India? Thanks
Hello, are there any customs issues moving stuff into India? Thanks
Thanks Balaji. I have a couple of question. 1. what is the montly cost of living in Gurgoan and living as close to the standard of life in the western countries? Does the cost of living include mortgage? 2. On an average how much do 3 bed 2.5 bath flat cost? 3. Is there any work life balance in IT jobs? I have heard people work till 10:30 in the night for IT jobs, is that true? Thanks.
Hi Priya
Its all depends on how much you are ready to afford and one's own lifestyle.
A spacious 3 bedroom flat might cost from 12k per month.
Work-life balance: Like i mentioned that was one of the key thing that i was looking for while hunting for a job. My current job has a good work-life balance . I heard most of the companies in Gurgaon dont work late hours. (but it depends on the type of the company) as well.
Priya - I think one of the important topics that come up during hiring discussions is "Flexible wok timing". This may end being one of the 2 things -1. you are given a black berry and need to be available on call / email at weird hours. which you cannot avoid when you are working away (time zones) from business hubs (london, Tokyo etc.,) 2. Work is the essence and your presence at work is realyl immaterial (look out for captive units who offer this) Lastly, Work-life balance is a very relative topic and shoudl be evaluated individually.
Balaji, Nice and crisp post. After finishing my PhD from a US university this june, I will be moving back to India. My office is located in DLF 5. Now, we are trying to find a job for my wife. She is an MBBS doctor. It would be great if you/your wife can provide us some pointers for medical job search. thanks in Advance. Great posts. keep posting. Vimal.
I would like to rent out my newly acquired apartment in Sohna Road. Its a 3 bedoom + servant apartment. Can you suggest how I can rent it out? I would prefer a company lease.
After reading balajis experience moving back to India I am getting a bit more optimistic in our decision to move back to India. I have been out of India since 1996 almost with less than 2 years in India in between. I have been 4 years in Qatar, where I worked as a Construction Manager and now I have been almost more than 6 and half years in the UK. I did my MBA here and had worked in many places. At the moment I am running my own limited company here . I had never thought of moving back to India till 6 months before when my mom visited me. She stayed with me for more that 3 months...that was perhaps the first 90 days I have spent with my mom together in the last 12 years. By the way I would like to mention that my wife is chinese. I met her when I was doing my MBA here in the UK. We have been married for now over 5 years. Now from her pespective it would indeed be very difficult to move to India but ironically she is more excited and determined to move to India. My only worry is about the acceptability in India for people like me in the job market. Most of the time people look at you with skepticism on your decision to move back. I need a bit more of feedback from people like you to help me out with my desire to resettle in India. Hope to get a few feedbacks
Hey - havign an MBA you and your wife should not have a problem finding a job in India (not sure if you plan to start your own here.). you need to be careful about the places (prefebaly metros) you choose though. The cosmopolitan outlook that some cities in India have (delhi, Gurgaon,Bangalore, chennai..etc.,) people are more than accepting returning Indians and other nationals also. She may have to get used to the language -- 5 (+1) years I am sure she knows her basics:) let us know in case you have any more specific questions.

Hi Thank you for a very clear narrative about your return home. I am glad I found your post as we are toying with the idea of returning back to I India after 13 years in the UK. My husband is a surgeon and we are both Tamilians - want to therefore settle down in Tamil Nadu. I am just completing MSC in E-learning technologies from one of the Unis in the UK. Can anybody advise me about the job prospects for e-learning back home? Have a good day!
Hi,
I googled for elearning jobs in Chennai and found lots of hits.
You can do a search in Naukri.com, JobStreet.com for job listings. I recently read in a magazine that India is developing lots of e-learning products.
Have a nice day.
Balaji
did you find your job after moving back to india or is it the other way around?
Other way.
Can industrial engineers get jobs in India? My husband is a BE in mechanical engineering and MS in IE. Where can he apply for jobs. I want to move to India for a long time, but am scared my husband might not get any good jobs. I myself am a Software professional. Your answer would help
Hi,
I just typed "industrial engineer" in http://www.naukri.com/index.php and it returned me 18000+ result. I think thats were you need to start.
Cheers
Balaji
Hi Balaji, Nice blog. This kind of blogs are very helpful for people like us. My background is Mechanical Engineering (India) and MS in Engineering Management (USA) (moreover Supply Chain Management side). How's the opportunities in Gujarat cities like Baroda, Ahmedabad?? Thanks,
I am in States for past 15 years and would like to move back to India. My question is how much money one needs to live a decent life per month. I do understand it's a very broad question and the answer depend from person to person. We do have a house in Gurgaon and I do not need to worry about renting a place. Just general necesseties, my daughter is only three and I want to make sure she go to a good school (probably the largest expense). Is it easy to land a job in Gurgaon and also what do you think about the work environment and culture since you are working there for two years now. Please reply. Thanks
Hi Balaji, I am a 27 years old female from North Delhi and I have done my Bachelors and Masters both in US and have been working here for 4 years now. I have been thinking of moving back lately due to my parents being pretty old and its hard for them to stay alone. I am in the IT industry and was wondering if I would be able to find something in India. I have never worked in India before. Also, how much money in a month is needed to maintain a comfortable life? I will be living with my parents so don't have to worry about renting. Would appreciate your reply :)
Hi Balaji, thanx for posting your expriance in india...i moved to newzealand almost 10 years ago..we planing to move back to india...your e-mial give us good out view..cheers..Jagdish..
Hi, thanks for sharing your experience. My husband and I have been living in canada for almost 5 years and are thinking of moving back to India as well. Reading your article put a rubber stamp on our decision. Thanks.
Nice topic. I moved back to India after living in canada for 5 years. but moving back to india is a very tought decision and not so easy, as it seems to be.
Did you have children when you moved to india? I have a 9 year old & 4 yr old and am worried abt their studies if I move bak..
Well after months and months of pondering and decision making I have finally decided to quit the UK even though I can stay here for life. I dont know what made us decide this but I guess it is our love for our own place probably. As I have written earlier, my wife is chinese and she is equally excited to fly to India. My mom and all relatives are waiting anxiously. I am confident I will make this move a worthwhile move. We intend to keep our feet both in delhi and shanghai. i guess that would be fun. Our planned touch down is on this 28th July. Keeping our fingers crossed for a move of the lifetime. Thank you guys for the inspiring posts you have left here in this blog. And our special thanks goes to balaji for having started this platform to help people like us in deciding what is right for us. Well wish us luck and I definitely intend to meet you all personally who have left comments on this blog.It would be interesting as well. Here we come India! Hooooooraaaah!
I have a masters in IT from RMIT, Melbourne too. Having lived in Australia for almost 8 years now, I am thinking about reloacting to Hyderabad, India as my dad recently passed away and my mom is alone. I have worked as a graphic designer for last 2 years. I am uncertain if moving back to India is a wise decision. Any suggestions?
the biggest challenge for me is to consider whether it is a good decision for my children whether to grow up in Australia where I live, or whether to go back to India. After having come here and being eligible for citizenship here, I am at a crossroads caught between wanting to go back but yet unable to say no to the good life here. How did you say yes to the chaos and crowds and infrastructure woes of India? It takes courage.
Hello Balagi, We are from Bangalore and after 16 yrs in the US are planning to move to Gurgaon early next year. Can you please let us know what are good places to stay. 3 bdr apt, school etc. Any help is appreciated. girish
Hi Girish, Gurgaon is quite a nice residential place. You can check http://www.99acres.com/ for rent details and other details. Most of the places in Gurgaon is good as they were all recently constructed with IT people in mind. Its important you ask the neighbours about the quality of the apartment colony before renting.

We have a 13 year old son and a 5 year old daughter and we are in Canada.Planning to move back to Cochin/Bangalore .but not sure how my son is going to cope up with the education system there.Plannign to look for CBSE syllabus schools with French option.Any suggestions?
Hello, I am planning to move back to india from the US. I have only spent 4.5 yrs here, and am a bit confused about whether it is too early to return. In fact, over the past 1.5 yrs the recession and retrenchment in the companies here has got my gut. Not being witness to this spectacle earlier in my career, I guess insecurity kept building up and came to a point where I decided to move back even if it is for a few years... FYI, I still have my job here but the company situation is as precarious as a year ago with no hope (I would say) in the next few fiscal quarters. Would appreciate if I could have your thoughts on a) Do you think it is too early to move back without trying longer? b) With a short stint abroad, there is really not much gain financially and/or careerwise upon return? (except of course that I get to be with family, culture and the jazz ...) I know that at the end of the day, "it depends on what I want in life" but your opinions could count in reducing my confusion...
Really helpful .... Balaji, can u also mail me abt work culture in Xebia and interview ques asked... my id singh15_charanjit@yahoo.com Thanks in advance it will be really kind of u.
Well it is a thought for the brave to move back to India I must admit. I have moved back to India last year in Aug 2009 and ever since I have been trying to adjust with the work culture, ethics, traffic system, weekend life stylou have, living style and much more. It sounds simple that if you have a well paid job here then you can do what ever you want. Honestly, it is a myth. Money if of no concern in the circle higher up here. Black money is in abundance and if you can change yourself to make that part of it then probably you can equalise your lifestyle with that you probably had abroad. I am facing the same problem here. Having lived in the West for around 12 years and most of it in England, I am more prone to following things as per the rules and guidelines and stick by the honesty rules: which infact is a farce here. If you stick with these values here you get left behind and that too far behind. Above all, my wife who is Chinese is finding it quite difficult to adjust with things here: dirty roads, crowded parking lots, shopping malls, garbage and litter all over. Having seen this problem here I had started a firm called Clean My India but I am getting a very cold response from the Citizens here in this country. Neither the individuals nor the corporates are showing any interest in this. Probably, if I am able to introduce a celebrity to this cause or attach a money making concept with this then I might some takers. But again, what ever is happening in India is happening out of greed and not development reasons. Even things like NAREGA or PMGSY projects are being done for the sake of generating black money for the corrupt elements in our Indian system: be it the bureaucrats or the politicians or industrialists. Everything of concern is happening here with the sole concept of generating money for the stake holders: the GREEDY cream, which approximately equates to around 25000. As per the figure there are only 25000 Indians who hold more than 90% wealth of the country. So how can we say we are moving towards much better and developed society. Well guys, in my view moving to India might turn out to be a decision which might haunt you for years. For me it has started to haunt now, and I must say, may be in few months from now I might raise my hands and give up and move on; anywhere but out of here. Stay where you are, carry on your fight to survive there for that fight might give you better results in the future then your decision to move back here. THINK...THINK......ANALYSE....CRITICALLY ANALYSE ......AND THEN DECIDE FOR GOOD. DECISION WOULD BE YOURS!
Hi, I am also planning to move back to India in 2011. The main reason I want to move back to India is Education for my 7 years old son. I am from Delhi orginially, but have been living in Canada from past 18 yrs. we are are planning to settle down in Khandala..are there any good jobs there?..tell me how did u find a job prior to leaving for India. I am from a teaching back, but have been working for the largest telecommunication company called Bell Canada as an Administrator..would I be able to find a job in Khandala, India? How about my son..he does not know Hindi..would he be able to adjust there..some questions..keep coming in my mind..may be u can help..Sunita
Hi Balaji, i just read your blog, can you tell me something about the work culture in Xebia and how is the company to start the career with? my email id is pankajkhattar2006@gmail.com. Thanks in advance.
Hello, Well I'm also thinking to move back to India. Actually i'm a permanent resident here in the US and have been here for 5 years. I'm doing my bachelors degree and i'll be done in 2 years. But my finance is in India and he doesn't want to move here in the US. So, i thought to move back in India to live with him. Is it a good idea? well I know it's all about my opinion and what I want in my life and my attitude towards it. But still, what's your opinion. He's well settled there so I won't be having any financial problem in the beginning. Should i go ahead and take this risk? and also my parents and whole family are here in the US. Should I make this move?
Hi
IMHO, the answer is very simple, if you both love each other truly, then location (US/India) and money doesn't matter at all. The happiness and money will come to your way then.
hi there the question i am going to ask is slightly offtrack from what you all have been discussing. i am an engineering 4th yr student from bits-pilani. i got a good score in gre(was told that i can aim at the top ten). but my final goal is to settle in india.this i am fixed on. so i wanted to know if spending all the money, taking all the pains to do ms from a us university is worth it if i finally want to work in india? also what are the chances that i will come back soon after my ms?
Hi Divya,
First try to analyse why you want to do M.S in US. Remember that you do M.S in US or MBA in IIM to add value to yourself and to your career. Money is secondary.
Nobody can judge whether you will come back after doing M.S.
Most of the people living abroad wants to come back to their home country after "certain" years but only few make it. :-)
