Musings in real time

It's been too long since I've written a book, but I've spent a lot of time recently writing about books.

I recently reviewed an excellent book about the Subversion version control system. If you're feeling some pain with SourceSafe or CVS, you ought to give Subversion a spin, and this book is a great introduction.
I also reviewed the latest entry from the Pragmatic Programmers bookshelf. "Ship It!" is a lifesaver for troubled projects; read it and keep it around for your next death march.
I've also been reviewing manuscripts. I'm one of the lucky folks who has seen the manuscript for AJAX in Action, coming this fall from Manning. AJAX is an interesting technology with broad applications, and it's fun, too. And what better way to learn about it? For my money, Eric Pascarello is the sharpest knife in the JavaScript drawer. I'll lay odds this is going to be a big hit for Manning.

Perhaps the best manuscript I read in recent weeks is one I can't say much about. It was a few chapters in English by Italian author Mauro Marinilli, writing about user interface design with Swing examples. I don't actually know whether the publisher picked it up or not. I hope they do -- it struck a perfect balance between theory and practice on a subject that's almost always tilted one way or another. The writing was polished and the figures were simply beautiful.
