The flight display screens at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport are implemented using (drum roll, please) Java Applets in AppletViewer's fullscreen mode.
I only know this because one of those screens crashed recently...

most of the crashed screens I see in airports are windows, and on 2 of the last 3 overseas flights I've got to see windowsCE bootscreens for the in-flight entertainment system.
I'll have to start keeping an eye out for a jvm stacktrace...

Most of the screens in Helsinki-Vantaa airport are indeed running Applets on top of Windows XP embedded, that is installed in a small PC behind the display. Actual disk drive is a small CF card.
Some screens at the airport are running Java applications on top of Linux, so they are not all running same os / software. These applications are using Full-Screen Exclusive Mode API. These installations are running in PCs that are integrated inside those displays (PC inside of that flat 30-42" TFT). These feature also small IDE flash drive.
