But Babyfishmouth is Leaving the Country...
Too Soon, Dammit
Aug 16, 2006
Bruno Kirby was a next-generation character actor along the likes of Gene Hackman and Steve Buscemi: strong enough to perform as a lead, but so much more valuable as a character actor.

Good character actors spell the difference between a lead actors and a star. Remember Mr. Satruday Night? I do. I liked it. I liked Billy Crystal in it. I'll get it on DVD when I see it.

But what does everyone remember Billy Crystal for? When Harry Met Sally, of course. Arguably also City Slickers. Anything those two movies have in common?

I remember Kirby best for his part in Tin Men. An argument starts when it's time to split the tab. DeVito, feeling the pressure of a long slump, tells Kirby he eats a lot more than anyone else. Kirby demands that DeVito rememeber what he has for breakfast the day before. It's a fun bit; the casting is inspired.

I use 2nd Lt. Stephen Hauk's best line from Good Morning, Vietnam all the time. This remains my tribute to Kirby.

Thanks to my political sailor-talk spitfire Hoosier blogmate for blogging the 411. With her and Stewart/Colbert on the case, who needs major media anymore?

Thanks for the shout, M. Draw something resembling anything!
