[Songs in the Key of Middle C] Happy Pi Day
Be on the lookout for 3/14/15, only 8 years away!
Mar 14, 2007
Among my many flights of fancy as a bored teenager, I started memorizing pi. A friend of mine sent me a letter, in '78 or so, in which he has typed the value of Pi, on the back of the envelope, to 220-odd decimal places. It was all the numbers he could find. I got as far as ...0974944, after an evening of wheelbarrowing sand and decomposed granite across my grandfather's desert backyard, and went out for a bike ride. Thirty years later, I can still repeat that modest sequence in a heartbeat.

Now of course on the internet you can easily find the calculated value out to many, many more digits. One tireless promoter for Pi, Eve Andersson, has maintained a page on Pi at least since her days as a Caltech undergrad, maybe longer. My personal favorite link is this one, a found homonym to one of my favorite historical figures in baseball.

So gather up a two pies' worth of good friends into a circle tonight and enjoy the evening!
