[Bunkhouse] Review of "Alfresco Enterprise Content Management Implementation" by Munwar Shariff
David reviewed Alfresco Enterprise Content Management Implementation by Munwar Shariff and gave it 2 out of 10 horseshoes.
The book does highlight the main sections of Alfresco and provide walk throughs of the functionality, but it's more of a glossy leaflet than a user guide. ... This books feels like it was written by someone who loves the product and wants to share this love with others, but it wasn't what I was looking for.

Ulf reviewed iText In Action by Bruno Lowagie and gave it 9 out of 10 horseshoes.
This reviewer recommends the book for everyone using iText as a companion to the -quite extensive- online documentation that is available as well. It covers many features of PDF that a casual user of Adobe Reader would not even think were possible, and for which the javadocs alone are not sufficient introduction.

A member wonders how JAX-WS web services can be used without a full-blown J2EE server, with just a standard servlet container. Turns out that's a bit under-documented, but possible. The details can be found in this thread in the Web Services forum.
Recognizing some of the shortcomings of the JavaRanch search page, and acting on a number of member requests, new search functionality has been implemented.
- It is now possible to search through several, or all, forums. So far this has not possible due to the load this placed on the system.
- You can now search for all posts of a particular member, e.g., your own posts. The results may span many pages, but it's no longer limited to a few hundred posts.
- The search is implemented in Java, proving that we actually do what we preach. In particular, the Apache Lucene library is used, without which none of this would be possible.
- Firefox search plugins for the forums and the FAQ are available.
A member wonders in which situations it is appropriate to write -or skip writing- technical specs and/or functional design specs, and which format and depth they should have. Ranchers offer advice from the trenches, especially regarding agile environments, in this thread in the Agile and Other Processes forum.
